Right. When I redid my blog, I found TONS of dead links. So many, I’m still weeding them out. Some of them, I’ve been able to update; however, other’s I haven’t. I’m looking for ideas on how I can preserve that content into the future yet respect the copyright of the authors. So far, the best idea I have is to have 2 links per link: 1 would point to the live content while the other would point to an archive I would keep myself. I’ve thought about screenshots…but then you can’t search text. I’ve thought about using wget, etc… to mirror the text of their page, but that doesn’t really respect their copyright. I’ve also thought about simply making a text file with the text in it and linking to that. But….
I can’t be the only person who has thought about this. I’ve tried searching Google but haven’t found anything. Do you, my readers, have any ideas on how I can keep a copy of pages I link to for posterity?
Why am I saying this? Well, David Cameron and the Conservative/Tory Party has been in power here in the UK for the past 3 years. They have made changes to benefits, reorganized the NHS, and made other unpopular stands but the deficit continues to grow. Not many people here like the tories. Why? Because they see them as “mean.” Personally, I think they are fiddling on the small things while the real root of the problem remains untouched.
So, what is the root of the problem in DC? The growing welfare state. The monster that is the federal government. Wasteful government spending. Addressing it is tricky, sure. But, it must be done. At the least, actual cuts must be made in the federal budget. The Connie Mack Penny plan would be a good place to start. Next, power that Washington stole from the States and people must be returned. Third, government agencies need to simply go away (Department of Education, Health and Human Services to name two).
Will it be unpopular? Sure. But let’s stand and fight where it matters. Just like Babe Ruth swinging for a home run, the conservatives should go for broke and ask for everything. Will it fail? Sure. But then just bring it up again. And again. And again.
Ever heard of Kickstarter.com? It is a place where people with an idea can go and ask other people to fund their project. If the project is completely funded then the supporters are charged. If not, they aren’t.
Well, this evening, I funded my first kickstarter project. I can’t tell you what (because Cyndi is going to end up with a surprise from it). But, later next month look forward to an update post.
For Christmas, we got Lydia Peppa Pig and the Queen on DVD. We were watching it tonight. Mrs. Rabbit gets an award as the most hard working person in all the kingdom and so Peppa and her classmates get to go see the queen. One of the kids asks the Queen:
See that? So far in January, my blog here has averaged 58 visitors per day, 370 pages viewed, and 624 hits (the 12.41MB is the daily data transfer average). This count excludes hits made by google, bing, and other search engine bots.
My question: has anyone who reads this blog ever ran ads on their blog? Ever made money? How’s it work? How did it work out?
I didn’t start this site so I could make money…It started because I didn’t ever want to have to change my email address again (this was pre-gmail days). Once I had the domain, I thought why not blog. So I started. I never thought it would get this big (and it isn’t big as big goes either). I don’t know…I’m on the fence. I wouldn’t mind if I could make enough to pay for the hosting…but then, I don’t really like the idea of running ads either.
[Update 2013-01-19 08:27:23] Well, I signed up for AdSense today; however, when I went to add the code to my site, I had second thoughts. I think I’ll hold off on this for now $100/year would pay for hosting; however, I think I want to try to keep this website “clean” for the time being. I may reconsider it later.
Yesterday, CERT issued a warning about a vulnerability in Java 7.10. No problem. I do all of my surfing on a Mac using Chrome and Java won’t run plugins in Chrome (Chrome is 32bit only while Java is 64bit only). The ONE thing I have to use Java and Safari for is to connect to a VPN.
I try this morning…it doesn’t work. So I go looking. It turns out that Apple thinks it has to babysit me. They have disabled Java on OSX. STUPID APPLE! I don’t need you to babysit me. I don’t need you to big brother my computer like this. This means if something goes wrong at the office until this gets fixed, I have to go in. It also means I can’t do any sort of remote work to help people. I can’t do jack squat.
Oh, this also means people who live in places where the government “watches” the internet and they use a VPN so the government can’t “watch”…thanks Apple…you’ve really messed over a whole scad of people.
[Update 2013-01-14 09:48:06] Oracle has released Java 7.11. I’m not sure if it resolves the bug/hole or not…but it re-enables Java in Safari. Go to java.com for the new version.
