Kindle

Writers Conference

WIth Christmas approaching, I’ve been asked by several people about the Kindle.  Why?  Well, I got Cyndi one last year for Christmas.  I liked it so much, I ordered one for my birthday.

Why would I buy a kindle over another e-reader?  I have more in this post, but here is a summary:

  • Price
  • Connectivity
  • International Connectivity

What does this mean?  If you are going to buy a 3rd generation kindle , get the 3g version.  Why?  Free internet access from wherever you are.  This one thing is what differentiates the kindle from other ereaders.

If you are worried about book selection, don’t worry.  Amazon has tons of free books (check every Thursday and you’ll find new free books).  If you don’t want to get books from Amazon, you can get anything in a variety of formats (basically the kindle supports every format EXCEPT epub).  But, I doubt you’ll have to go anywhere but Amazon…of the 700+ books in our archive, we’ve spent < $20 on books.

Defiance by Don Brown (Book 3 in the Navy Justice Series)

Defiance Don Brown

For my reviews of Book 1 Treason and Book 2 Hostage, follow the links.

Defiance by Don Brown continues the Navy Justice Series by Don Brown. This book picks up after a trial of several aviators. There are two stories running in parallel that Don Brown brings together in the end of the book. Overall, a good fast clean read, My only complaint with Don Brown is too little detail. He weaves a good story, but doesn’t focus on any one thing while he writes. But, I am a John Grisham fan and always like how he makes the trial central character in his books.

Here are some stats for the book:
Publisher: Zondervan
Locations: 6,556
Errors: There were a few minor formatting errors (extra spaces, etc….)
Cost: $0.00
Overall: 7 out of 10

Hostage by Don Brown (Book 2 in the Navy Justice Series)

Hostage Don Brown

For my reviews of Book 1 Treason and Book 3 Hostage, follow the links.

Continuing the series started in Treason, the story in Hostage picks up after a huge trial. Again, Don Brown proves to be a good author writing a fast paced entertaining book. However, again, unlike John Grisham, don’t expect details of the trials to abound. Also, unlike Tom Clancy, don’t expect there to be pages devoted to details of military hardware or operations. Again, Don Brown makes mention of his characters Christian books, but it is just a part of the characters lives.

As an interesting note, I read this book third because of an error in this book. At location 27, where the book lists other books by Don Brown, the publisher has listed Defiance as book #2 instead of this book.

Here are some stats for the book:
Publisher: Zondervan
Locations: 6,134
Errors: Location 27 in this book states that Defiance is book 2. That is incorrect….this book is book 2. In addition, there were a few minor formatting errors (extra spaces, etc….)
Cost: $0.00
Overall: 7 out of 10

Treason by Don Brown (Book 1 in the Navy Justice Series)

Treason Don Brown

Treason is the first book in Don Brown’s Navy Justice series. (For my reviews on book 2 Hostage and book 3 Defiance, follow the appropriate links.). Overall, this book was a good fast read. Don Brown’s style isn’t that of John Grisham, so don’t read the book expecting lots of coutroom drama. In fact, an earlier, more insignificant trial in Treason takes up much more of the book than the climax trial. Some reviewers on Amazon have made mention of the books overt “pitch” of Christianity. While the book is no theological tome, there are mentions of the faith of the characters; however, I wouldn’t say the author pushes Christianity.

Here are some stats for the book:
Publisher: Zondervan
Locations: 6,259
Errors: I only remember a few minor formatting errors (extra spaces, etc….)
Cost: $0.00
Overall: 7 out of 10

The Memoirs of General Ulysses S. Grant, Part 1, by U.S. Grant

The Memoirs Of General Ulysses S Grant Part 1

I came across Grant’s Memoirs (part 1) while I was poking around on Amazon’s website. This first volume covers his life up through the Mexican American war. It is a good easy read and has been educational so far. The only complaint I have is that Amazon has multiple copies–free and for a price–editions of this work. I thought I had downloaded all of the parts of the correct edition; however, when i finsihed this part, I didn’t have part 2 of this edition (although I had it from another edition). This cost me some reading time because I had to wait for internet access so i could find the correct next edition of this book.

Here are some stats for the book:
Publisher: Unknown
Locations: 1,557
Errors: There were a few minor formatting errors (extra spaces, etc….)
Cost: $0.00
Overall: 7 out of 10

The Angel Experient (Maximum Ride Book 1) by James Patterson

The Angel Experiment James Patterson

I snagged this book, The Angel Experiement Book 1 by James Patterson simply because it was free. It was a decent fast read. It had some bad language in it, but the story is good. I haven’t read the rest of the series, so I’m in a lurch about where Patterson actually takes it. What’s the book about? Imagine being a cross between bird and human….that’s right, a human with wings and the ability to fly (a common dream of many people I would think). But, imagine if that came about through some kind of experimentation….. This series appears to put a group of kids in this situation. it deals with them while they are run off from their hideout by erasers and then try to find out more about their own history.

Here are some stats for the book:
Publisher: Hachette Book Group
Locations: 5,587
Errors: There were a few minor formatting errors (extra spaces, etc….)
Cost: $0.00
Overall: 5 out of 10

Conspiracy in Kiev by Noel Hynd

ConspiracyInKievCoverByNoelHynd

Conspiracy in Kiev by Noel Hynd.  This was my first long book on the kindle for pc app.  I really wondered how my eyes would do.  But, I’ve found that if I set my contrast all the way on low that the strain on my eyes isn’t bad.  I can read for 1-2 hours at a stretch (about the limit of my tablet pc battery.  Yep, I’ve finally found a use for the tablet feature!).

The book has 6,841 locations.  I don’t remember any sex–although there are several scenes where the characters are in bars with women dancing, etc….–but there is some violece.  Although, the voilence is of a “normal” nature and isn’t gratuitious.

What would a mild mannered FBI detective have to do with a Ukranian mob boss?  What would both of them have to do with the President of the US?  How does this relate to the famine in the USSR/Ukrane before WW2?  And how do languages play into the mix?  This was a good book that flowed fast and was fast paced.

Murder Takes the Cake by Gayle Trent

MurderTakesTheCakeCoverGayleTrent

Murder Takes the Cake by Gayle Trent .  I started reading this just because it looked interesting.  At first, I didn’t know if I would like it (it is too much like the cat books–no, I didn’t get one and read it…Cyndi got one on tape nd we listed to it about 7 years ago or so.  I would avoid all of them if I were you).

The book has 2,505 locations.  Imagine leaving your job, moving to another town–a small town–to start a new life as a cake decorator.  What happens when you deliver a cake to the town gossip for the 3rd time?  What happens if that gossip isn’t alive when you show up, but the door is unlocked?  You don’t know any better, so you go in.  How will the townspeople accept you?
