This picture was taken close to the center of town–they call is centar (pronounced tsentar) here. It shows a typical street full of shops. There is a Mesara (meat shop) sign visible. Even though there are no “funny letters” on that sign, rest assured that it is in cyrillic. How do I know? Well, let me tell you.

First, the sign looks like this: MECEPA.

The letters make the following sounds if the sign were written in the latin alphabet:
M: M like in Mark
E: E like in fEll
C: TS like in caTS
E: E like in fEll
P: P like in Pop
A: A like in fAther

This means the word would be pronounced something like METSEPA

The letters make the following sounds if the sign were written in the cyrillic alphabet:
M: M like in Mark
E: E like in fEll
C: S like in Spam
E: E like in fEll
P: R like in Rush
A: A like in fAther

This means the word would be pronounced something like MESERA

I asked our language teacher how you know which way the sign is wiritten in if every letter exists in the alphabet. her answer…..simply that there is no word METSAPA so you know it must be MESERA. Great help for a noob!!
