Question

Ceinture... #clothes #ceinture #jean #belt

Every morning, I have this question as I put on my belt:  Is there a “correct” way to put the belt on?

For example, my nylon belt, I usually put on going counter-clockwise (looking down.  Using the first loop on my right as I’m wearing the pants).  This way, I cinch it up on my left.  It works out well that way.

With my leather belt, I do it just the opposite.  It buckles differently.

My question:  is there a “correct” way one is supposed to wear a belt?

Lance Has Admitted to Doping

Here’s a link to the flv if the youtube video goes down.

Lance has admitted to doping.  I remember wondering if he had or not back when he was winning the TDF.  Especially the year of Operation Puerto, I remember wondering if.  Then, when Landis tested positive, I wondered more.  But, he was the most tested cyclist in all of history.  The French hated him.  I always wondered how he kept passing if he really was doping.  Even when the US Cycling Association issued the report against him, I wondered if it was really a witch hunt (remember, most tested cyclist in history and the French hated him)

I’m sure…

Diary

…there are people out there wondering why I’m posting such intimate details (weight, waist, neck, and body fat info) on my blog for everyone to see.  Here’s the questions/objections I can think of:

  1. No one cares, post something different.
  2. Wow, that is personal information
  3. Why?

Here’s the answers I can think of.

Answer 1:  Frankly, I don’t really care that no one cares.  I started this blog in Feb 2005 because I wanted to write on the internet.  At the time, I thought it may take the place of a journal; however, I quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen–there are things one writes in a journal that aren’t shared.  Since then, I’ve gone through highs and lows of blogging and not blogging.  But, I do this because I want to and have something to share.  You can read it or not.  Either way, it doesn’t really bother me.

Answer 2:  Yes, but if you look at me, you can see I’m heavy.  I’m way heavier than at my lowest point.  But, I’m actually below where I graduated high school at (I’m almost certain of this).  Last time I lost weight, I posted some things online, but kept waist/neck/body fat percent in a small notebook.  I don’t have a clue where that notebook is now and I’d like to be able to see what it was then (and where I actually was).

Answer 3:  I’m posting it because I want to.  In a year or so, I would like to be able to look back and see how I’ve improved.  I could keep it in a notebook; however, the last time I did that I lost the notebook.  I expect I’ll keep this website up until the WWW becomes obsolete.  I’ve even toyed with the idea of setting aside money for heirs to pay for hosting after I die.  That may seem a bit vain, but look at Sheldon Brown’s bicycle site (the best on the internet):  he wrote tons of articles that are extremely useful.  Now, I don’t have too many HOWTOs, but the ones I do have are hit quite often.

Anyway, the main reason I’m doing this is so I can look back in a year, two, or three to compare where I am then with where I am now.  A second reason is the chance that I might encourage someone else.  Who knows if someone will search the internet and come across my posts where I talk about my change and be inspired.  From personal experience (and an all-time high weight of 290lbs) I know when I workout I feel better.

Ideas — blogs, linking, and keeping information

tombstone shadows

Right.  When I redid my blog, I found TONS of dead links.  So many, I’m still weeding them out.  Some of them, I’ve been able to update; however, other’s I haven’t.  I’m looking for ideas on how I can preserve that content into the future yet respect the copyright of the authors.  So far, the best idea I have is to have 2 links per link:  1 would point to the live content while the other would point to an archive I would keep myself.  I’ve thought about screenshots…but then you can’t search text.  I’ve thought about using wget, etc… to mirror the text of their page, but that doesn’t really respect their copyright.  I’ve also thought about simply making a text file with the text in it and linking to that.  But….

I can’t be the only person who has thought about this.  I’ve tried searching Google but haven’t found anything.  Do you, my readers, have any ideas on how I can keep a copy of pages I link to for posterity?

I Just Supported my First Kickstarter Project

kickstarter-badge-funded

Ever heard of Kickstarter.com?  It is a place where people with an idea can go and ask other people to fund their project.  If the project is completely funded then the supporters are charged.  If not, they aren’t.

Well, this evening, I funded my first kickstarter project.  I can’t tell you what (because Cyndi is going to end up with a surprise from it).  But, later next month look forward to an update post.

Making Money?

20130112_Stats

See that?  So far in January, my blog here has averaged 58 visitors per day, 370 pages viewed, and 624 hits (the 12.41MB is the daily data transfer average).  This count excludes hits made by google, bing, and other search engine bots.

My question:  has anyone who reads this blog ever ran ads on their blog?  Ever made money?  How’s it work?  How did it work out?

I didn’t start this site so I could make money…It started because I didn’t ever want to have to change my email address again (this was pre-gmail days).  Once I had the domain, I thought why not blog.  So I started.  I never thought it would get this big (and it isn’t big as big goes either).  I don’t know…I’m on the fence.  I wouldn’t mind if I could make enough to pay for the hosting…but then, I don’t really like the idea of running ads either.

[Update 2013-01-19 08:27:23] Well, I signed up for AdSense today; however, when I went to add the code to my site, I had second thoughts.  I think I’ll hold off on this for now  $100/year would pay for hosting; however, I think I want to try to keep this website “clean” for the time being.  I may reconsider it later.

Oh No, I Actively Reject It

Flu fighter gets the flu jab

So why do so many people skip getting the vaccine?  According to one doctor, people do not actively reject the vaccine.  Instead they are merely unsure of whether or not they really need it.

From http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/01/10/flu-outbreak-why-are-so-many-not-getting-vaccinated

Nope.  I actively reject it.  I make a conscious choice every year to not get vaccinated against the flu.  I also think the chicken pox vaccine is a bad idea.

Broken Glasses

Last time I bought glasses, I bought one of those bendy glasses that won’t break.  Well, this morning…they broke.  As I was cleaning them, the piece across the nose broke.  I had to wake Cyndi up to look for my spare pair (I can’t see squat without my glasses).  Here’s a few pictures:

Broken glasses 1 Broken glasses 2

Now, there’s a small problem:  my spare glasses have normal lenses while my regular pair has high index lenses that are thinner. I’ve had this problem before, but the light bends differently through the two lenses and causes my eyes to work different.  Below is a picture, but I’m going to head to Specsavers today to see if they can switch lenses…I already have a headache, but I can’t do without.

Sleeping and Kids

Cry out loud

Before Lydia was born, Cyndi and I had someone give us a copy of Babywise or Along the Infant Way.  The basics of this are parent directed feeding, playing, and sleeping.  It worked wonders so we did the same thing with Isaac.  The same thing happened.  While he is going through a phase where we wakes up at 4am or so, he sleeps very well.  One thing we did for both of them was let them cry a bit if it wasn’t time for them to eat.

As Gomer Pile once said:  Surprise, Surprise, SURPRISE.  The Telegraph has an article talking about how it is beneficial for babies to cry a bit and not have parents respond immediately to their cries in the middle of the night.
