Hotel Speed

Cyndi and I are staying at the Country Club Motor Lodge in fairmont, WV tonight.  They have free WiFi (go for them).  So far, it seems fairly fast.  Here is a report from DSLReports.com:

The Image Was Removed

[Update 22 Dec 2012 07:43] The image was bad.  I’ve updated the page; however, I think the info was long gone.

Interesting Tidbit

Use Vista? Installed SP1? Why not clean up all the old files and get some extra hard drive space back?

I saw this article today talking about the necessity of doing just that: http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/finish-install-windows-vista-sp1-clean-junk-files/2641/

When you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 on your computer, the SP1 installer will not remove the older versions of Vista files from the hard drive. This is because the older files may be required in case you decide to uninstall SP1 later from the system.

Naturally, these files occupy important disk space. If you are satisfied with the performance of Windows Vista SP1 and unlikely to remove it later, why not reclaim some disk space by removing all the older Vista files.

There are no manual steps involved. Just open your Windows command prompt and type vsp1cln.exe (short for Vista SP1 Cleaner). It takes less than a minute to execute.

Juice Error

Occasionally, Juice wouldn’t start but would error out. Seemingly for no reason. After googling for the error, I didn’t find anything, but have a fix work-around.

The error I was seeing in juice.exe.log was:

Traceback (most recent call last):

File “gui.py”, line 4, in ?

File “iPodderGui.pyc”, line 3621, in main

File “iPodderGui.pyc”, line 707, in __init__

File “wx\_core.pyc”, line 5301, in __init__

File “wx\_core.pyc”, line 4980, in _BootstrapApp

File “iPodderGui.pyc”, line 1472, in OnInit

File “iPodderGui.pyc”, line 934, in SetLanguages

AttributeError: ‘iPodderGui’ object has no attribute ‘menu’

I fixed this by setting my shortcut to run in xp service pack 2 compatable mode.

New Picture Gallery

I just wanted to let everyone know that Cyndi and I have moved our pictures to Flickr.  I was having issues trying to run my own picture gallery (although that is still the longterm goal I’ll settle to simply have the pictures here).

I would have gone with Pacassa; however, google simply wanted too much.  $25/year for unlimited pictures is way better than google’s per megabyte per year charge.

Admin Shares and Vista

Well, our computer died a few months ago and we got a laptop to replace it.  It came with Vista (joy of joys).  After trying (yes, I really tried) to get used to UAC, I turned it off (what a stupid feature.  I know…I know…it is supposed to make it more secure, but I fail to see how.  Everyone is just going to click yes or allow to every stupid dialog that comes up.  I digress….).

Anyway, vista doesn’t set up the admin shares by default (you know, the C$, D$, etc… shares).  Well, that isn’t so much of a problem (I’d rather have to enable them than turn them off) but instead of a nice setting (set up admin share or something nice), I’ve got to add a registry key?!

Stupid Article

I was reading some technology news this morning when I came across this article talking about the Internet getting full (actually running out of capacity).

The main point of the article?

“The study is the first to “apply Moore’s Law (or something very like it) to the pace of application innovation on the ‘Net,” the study says. “Our findings indicate that although core fiber and switching/routing resources will scale nicely to support virtually any conceivable user demand, Internet access infrastructure, specifically in North America, will likely cease to be adequate for supporting demand within the next three to five years.”

But later on, they say:

U.S. lawmakers can also help in several ways, he said. For example, the U.S. Congress could require that home contractors who receive government assistance for building affordable housing include broadband connections in their houses, he said. Congress could also provide tax credits to help broadband providers add more capacity

How does adding broadband connections in new houses help the core providers increase capacity? If anything, that stupid law would increase demand and speed the “demise” of the Internet (that won’t happen, but the article claims it will). Why can’t people think logically when they write things? Why can they not extrapolate out the impact of what they are thinking?

John Piper Appears to Get It

The IT in this case is ministries making information available for free. I suggest you go read his post and make up your own mind; however, I would want to bias you towards making your information available for free.
