Neat Idea but Stupid Website

I was randomly surfing the Internet today before my Bible Study and came across a site called MapJack. It is kinda like google street view except they seem to focus on overseas locations. Turns out they had pictures of a place I’d been–Chiang Mai Thailand. I wish I could link to the right to those pictures, but the stupid site embeds everything behing tons of Javascript. So, just go to the site, and choose Thailand, Chiang Mail from the drop down.

This stuff is dumb

We get lots of odd channels over here. One of them that I come across is Fashion TV. They broadcast things like interviews with designers, runway shows, etc…. I never watch it and only see it when I flip by….but….most of the outfits I have seen on the channel are downright goofy. I don’t know why anyone would come up with them…let alone buy them to wear them.

What do you think?

I was surfing the web today and came across a picture (click the read more link to see it).  It made me stop, think, and wonder.  As a Christian, I realize that lost people act…well…lost.  But, in my mind, this goes beyond that.  The picture has a young girl (perhaps < 10) performing what I see as a distincly American act (remember the scene in Top Gun?  No, not that one…the other one.  The one where Goose and Mavrick are keeping up international relations.  Get the idea??), to a way older woman (80s or 90s) in a country where your anscestors and older people are supreme.

So, did the girl know what she was going?  Who knows.  I’ve met kids here in Serbia who are 5 or 6 and can cuss like sailors.  And that is all of the english they know.  Do they really know what they are saying?  I don’t know.  Probabaly not.  I like to think not.  But, I don’t know.  If they don’t know, then what does that say about our country and what we export to the rest of the world?  If they do know, shouldn’t that cause us Christians to think and share the love of Jesus with them?

I put the picture after the jump becase…well, I don’t know.  If you want to see it, click through.  If you don’t, don’t worry about it.

By the way, on the photographer’s website, he has a captiony type thing.  Here it is:

I realize capture this moment when reviewed some photos I had capture that day on my PC.
Maybe she’s only joking, but what’s she doing, personally not permissible for me.
Why a little girl on her age doing act like that ?
Maybe she’s only follower from TV action, I don’t know.
I can’t understand.
Something wrong about young generation surroundings me.
Shame for me…but that fact I found on the street.

A Really Bad Idea

This is why this is a bad idea.  Now, instead of paying for houses of people who can’t do basic math, we–the US taxpayer–is going to pay for their bigscreen TV that they put on their credit card.  ARG!!!

This is Dumb

I agree with Bruce. This is really dumb. Although if you read the comments people have left on his site, there are other reasons for why the plugs were turned off. If you read the article, there are several things mentioned. Below are two things I think we can learn:

1) “Terrorism” has become a weasel word and is thrown around as an excuse for everything. Can I use the bathroom? Nope, terrorists might plant a bomb there. Can I take this bottle of water on the plane Nope, it might be an explosive… dump it out into this container with several gallons of other unknown liquids that may also explode (language warning. Sorry, I couldn’t find what I was looking for without it 🙁 ) I’m a pilot and got this silverware off the plane, can I take it with me on my next flight No, it’s a knife. See what I mean?!?! Think people…THINK!

2) Classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. People don’t think about the impact on others (or if they do, it is always them who will handle the communication). If you are making a change, setting something up differently, etc…. make sure people know.

American Idioms that have No Sebian Equivalent

hang a Uie/make a u turn
Jury-rigged
pokin the rain down

that’s all I can think of right now. As we learn more, we’ll probabaly find some Serb sayings that have no American equivalent.

If there is a hard part to cross-cultural communication, it is this. Try and take note of all of the idioms you use during a day. Try to explain yourself without using them. Or try to explain them. It is very hard isn’t it. Now, imagine trying to explain spiritual matters to someone. That’s very hard. And very good motivation to learn the language!
