All Wet!

06062008(001)

We got caught in the rain on our way home from language on Friday. Well, we didn’t really get caught in the rain as much as we didn’t have any other choice.. We left ETC (our language school) and stopped by the store because we wanted to buy some onion rings. Well, they turned out to be fish rings (no, we didn’t buy them). We went to another grocery store and found the same thing. This whole time, the sky looked more and more like a storm so we went into the mallie type place in the center of town (that is у сентару if you are speaking Serbian). We walked around and decided to have coffee. Well, Cyndi had sprite and I had some Turkish Serbian Coffee. It started poking the rain down (that means it is raining really really hard for everyone who doesn’t know proper terms out there).

We finished and decided it wasn’t going to let up so we got up and walked downstairs. When we got outside, it had let up some so we decided to walk home (well, it was less that and more we didn’t know how to tell the cab company where we were. The discussion went more and more like: How do we tell the cabbie where we are? U Centru. But where in the center? I don’t know. What do you want to do? I don’t know. Any idea how to hail a cab? Nope. Want to call? It looks like it is letting up, let’s just go for it.).

It went ok until about 1/2 way home it started really raining. Then about 3/4 of the way home, it really started raining. About 2 blocks from our house, we decided to go into the store and see if we could get the lady to tell the cab company where we were. But, we didn’t have that much farther to go, so we went for it. Well, it started poking the rain down. Across from our apartment building, I snapped this picutre of us.

Earthquake! Really?

I was reading the news this afternoon (taking a short break from my Serbian homework) when I came across this news story on the B92 news site (B92 is a Serbian news agency that has been functioning fow quite some time) about an earthquake. In Greece I just wanted to let everyone know that, even though it was 600 km or so away, that is still fairly close. But…don’t worry. I didn’t even know it happened until I read this news report.

Freebies for Lydia

06092008(001)So I have about 100 blog posts that need to be written, but I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen…so I’ll just write a little one today and see what happens 🙂

Lydia must be really cute or else really pitiful, because people keep giving her things.  I starting noticing it before we left the States.  We ate at Burger King and I took Lydia to the table.  The manager helped Matt with the tray and brought Lydia one of the “under 3” toys!  On the plane, the United flight attendant wanted to give her ice cream, which he gave to us when he found out she couldn’t have it 🙂  (By the way, we had so many people help us with bags and getting on/off the planes as we traveled.  It was such an incredible blessing.)  On the Lufthansa flight, they gave her a bunch of kid stuff as we disembarked.

Since we’ve gotten here, she’s had people in shops give her balls 3 or 4 times and she’s been offered free plain cones when we’ve stopped for ice cream.

We’d better be careful or she’ll end up one spoiled little girl!!

Some Low Life….

…stole my bike seat today. I had my bike locked up in the basement of our building. When I went down today to ride it, I found that some dirtbag had stole my seat and cut the cable for my cyclometer. ARG!

Vonage Back Up

All, thanks to God’s provision, our Vonage phone is working again.  Last year, some friends here (who just “happen” to have the same Vonage phone we do) had their phone die.  Vonage sent them not just one, but two power plugs (again, just by “accident.”).  Well, they gave us their extra one.  So, we are now back online.

 Thanks for the patience!

Communications Update

In an update to this post about overseas communication I made a comment about truphone and not being able to get it to work. I originally thought the problem was my phone (the firmware is 2 versions behind and the updates fix some problems with WiFi…but I can’t update it because the Nokia Updater app isn’t vista compatable yet) but it is fixed. How?

Well, I saw that Truphone came out with version 4 so I installed it. Well, lo and behold, it connected and worked. So, I’m back to it being my preferred VoIP client on my phone. Why? Well, it stayed connected all night and the gizmo settings for my phone disconnect every once and a while. I’ll continue testing it and post updates as I find things out and make up my mind.
